Dos and Don'ts               Purpose of Story Hour

Ages 7 - 14 months
1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month
9:30 a.m.

Here are a few "do and don'ts" to keep in mind when our program is in session. Your cooperation will help all who attend to enjoy these sessions.
  1. Parent participation is key to the success of this program! You are best equipped to help your child focus on our activities. Please join in the activities and show your child it's fun!
  2. Please put toys and food away. They distract your child and other children. If bottles, blankets and other not-to-be parted with items are necessary, we will work with it.
  3. If your child is crying loudly or otherwise distracting the group, or in another sense, losing control, please feel free to step out and "regroup." Please talk to me if you are unsure about your child's behavior.
  4. Relax! It is not expected that your child will sit and participate in each activity. Our goal is to have fun with rhymes, songs, and other language building play.
  5. Please feel free to browse our Parenting Resource Collection and make use of the wonderful resources that the library has.

Story Hour Do's and Don'ts

  1. Story Hour will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.  Please arrive early to find name tags and get situated.  Each session will last for one-half hour.

  2. If your child should become restless, please leave the area as quietly as possible.  This will minimize the distraction for everyone else.

  3. Parents and caregivers are required to stay with Book Babies and Toddlers.

  4. The program has been designed to include a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and other age appropriate activities.  Some children may participate, while others may be content to observe.  All adults, however, should participate to set an example.

  5. In case of inclement weather, call (270) 826-3712 to see if story hour is being held.

  6. Thank you for your help in making this a positive experience for the children.

Purpose of Story Hour

The purpose of preschool story hour is to introduce language, literature and the library to children and parents or caregivers in a positive and fun manner.  Each week a different letter of the alphabet will be featured and introduced with themes such as "A" is for Apple Pickin' Time, "F" is for Farmyard fun, "H" is for Horses& Cowboys, and "P" is for Penguins on Parade.  The programs will consist of stories, songs fingerplays, rhymes and crafts to help preschool children enlarge their experiences, experiment with language, and to acquire a story sense that will help in developing reading skills.  Story hours also help children acquire interactive skills and serve to further strengthen the parent-child bond.

Each weekly session will last for approximately one half-hour. All programs begin the week of October 3, 2006 through the week of December 21, 2006 and then will resume January 7, 2007 through May 14, 2007.  You do not need to register again.  Group size for all programs is limited, so you will want to register early.
