Registration
The library offers basic computer classes in a progressive sequence that we recommend to those who are new to using the computer and the Internet. This is a recommended sequence only. You may take the classes in any order as long as you meet the described prerequisites. The recommended sequence is below along with the available dates and times of each class. For job hunters, the library also offers a Résumé & Cover Letters class.
Please note: Registering for a waiting list lets the Library estimate demand and
gives you priority registration on the class when more sessions are available.

Basic Computer Classes Track

Senior Moments
This two day session will provide hands-on computer training one and a half hours each day for seniors who have little or no experience with computers. Come join other seniors for these free hands-on sessions. You will practice: the basics of turning on and shutting down a computer, become familiar with the parts of a computer, maneuver a mouse, learn ways to save data, open, close, edit, and print documents. You'll also work with pictures and/or attachments, and where to save them so you can find them again.
Prerequisites: None.

Introduction to Computers
This workshop will offer participants a hands-on opportunity to learn about the basic parts of a computer. Learn how to open and close programs, save documents, use a mouse and become familiar with a keyboard.

Internet Basics
This is a beginner workshop for those with little or no Internet experience. Learn how to navigate the Internet using hyperlinks, toolbar buttons, History feature, and basic searching skills. Find out where to type in web addresses and search topics. Favorites, History, and Internet safety will also be introduced. Cut and paste web addresses, text, or pictures from a website into a word processor.
Prerequisites: Must be experienced using the mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Email Basics
This workshop will offer practice in basic and advanced Gmail activities. Participants will walk through the process of setting up a free Gmail account and spend time composing and sending email messages to each other. Time will be spent formatting text, attaching files to email messages, reading and replying to incoming email, and storing email addresses in a personal address book. Bring email addresses of friends and family.
Prerequisites: Must be experienced using the mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. Must also have a basic knowledge of using an Internet browser.

Save in a Flash
Learn how to connect, save, and safely disconnect a USB flash drive from the computer so you don't risk losing valuable data.
Prerequisites: Must bring your own USB flash drive. Must be experienced using the mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Super Word
We've combined the best of our Word Level I and Level II classes into a streamlined session to maximize your time and effort and get you up to speed as quickly as possible. We will start with the ribbon in Microsoft Word 2010 and take you through the basic steps in creating a simple document. Learn to enter and format text; use copy and paste functions; insert clip art, pictures, and page numbers; use spell and grammar check; and finally, print and/or save your document.
Prerequisites: Must be experienced using the mouse and familiar with basic keyboarding skills.

Windows Live Movie Maker
Windows Live Movie Maker is a free software program from Microsoft that lets you turn photos and videos into movies that you can share with family or friends. The movies can be saved on a PC, or saved to a DVD which can be later played on a DVD player, or send to Facebook through plug-ins. The movie can be enhanced by adding music, titles, credits, captions, and transitions. System requirements: Windows Vista or 7.

Windows Live Photo Gallery
Windows Live Photo Gallery is a free photo software program from Microsoft that lets you import photos from your camera, CD, or flash drive onto your computer. WLPG allows you to view, sort, edit and display in a slideshow. The photos can be edited, tagged, and organized into albums. Bring your pictures either on your camera, a CD, or on a flash drive. System requirements: Windows Vista or 7.

Digital Photo S.O.S.
Learn how to Save, Organize, and Share (S.O.S.) your digital photos using Flickr, an online photo management and sharing website. Learn how to create an account plus upload, edit, organize, and share photos and videos with friends and family. Please bring digital photos on a CD or flash drive or a digital camera with USB cable for hands-on experience.

iPad Basics
Do you own an iPad or plan on getting one? Come to this class and learn the basics of how to navigate the iPad, search the Internet using Safari and learn how to bookmark sites, learn how to buy apps from the App Store plus learn to move, delete, and become familiar with some popular apps, you'll also learn to update and sync iTunes, and use email.

Talk Don't Type with Skype
Want to stay in contact with loved ones? If you have a webcam, a computer, a microphone, and an Internet connection it's easy to make video calls with Skype. We'll also show you how to create and receive video emails with Eyejot and MailVu without downloading any software and send videos through email with Microsoft Movie Maker.
Prerequisites: Must be experienced using the mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. Must also have a basic knowledge of using an Internet browser.

Come to the Library and learn how to use the world's largest social networking website. Led by Facebook expert Mary Biever, participants will learn how to navigate the site, find Friends, update their status, set privacy controls, and more. Registration is required and all participants must have an email account and a Facebook account before registering. Interested participants may schedule a one-on-one session with the Library's Public Computer Instructor, Retta Zollinger, to set up email and Facebook accounts prior to registration.

Downloading Library Books and More
Grab your laptop, iPhone, iPod, Kindle, MP3 player, smartphone, NOOK, Kobo, or any of their cousins. There will be a demonstration and Q&A session on how to borrow digital materials, including eBooks, from the library's website and download them to your gadget. Thousands of bestselling and classic books are available to download 24/7 and the best part is there are no late fees or items to lose! You will learn how to search the website, select items, place holds, make requests, check out, download, and transfer the items to your portable device. We encourage you to bring your portable device and/or laptop so you can practice. A limited number of laptops will be available for practice for those who do not have one. You will need to know your library card number and password to use the service.
