Rotunda Renovation Friday, August 8, 2003

After 99 years of service, the Library Board of Trustees decided it was necessary for the original roof of the rotunda dome to be replaced. During this process, the Board evaluated the rotunda for other areas that needed improvement. In an effort to preserve the historic building, the stained glass and skylight were removed from the top of the rotunda to be refurbished and restored. In addition, the large brass chandelier was also removed to be cleaned and refurbished.

The stained glass awaits its journey to the top!

Steve Martin, of Martin Studio, rides the crane to get a bird's-eye view.

Library Director, Donald Wathen, and Andy Preske, of Preske Copper & Tin, watch from atop the Library.

Up, up, and away!

There was lots of excitement at the Library when the newly restored stained glass was returned to its home. With the help of a large crane, the stained glass was carefully lowered through the roof of the dome and secured in place. Stop by and see the beauty of this stained glass. Next week, the brass chandelier is scheduled to be re-installed.

Getting closer ...

Almost there ...

A view from the inside of the Library.

Just a few more inches ...

What a relief! Joe Helming, of Helming Brothers, sets the glass in place.

The newly constructed skylight.

Andy Preske and Allen Mullins, of Quality Painting, get the skylight in position.

What a difference it makes!

A picture just doesn't do it justice.
