The Preservation Station is a do-it-yourself space that offers tools for digitizing items including family photos, cookbooks, audio recordings, and home movies. The Preservation Station gives patrons the knowledge and tools they need to save their family histories and personal histories for future generations.
Documents and photographs (up to 12” x 17”), films (35 mm slides and negatives), VHS and VHS-C, 8 mm or Super 8 films, audio cassette tapes, and 3.5” floppy disks can all be digitized.
This digitization service is available by appointment to library patrons for self-directed use during regular library hours in the Research Room of the Genealogy and Local History Department located in the original Carnegie library.
Conditions of use:
- All Preservation Station users must read, sign, and submit a Preservation Station User Agreement to the Genealogy/Local History Department during the first appointment.
- Staff will assess items brought into the Preservation Station to investigate their condition before using the equipment.
- Patrons will be trained how to use the equipment during the first appointment. A staff member is available to help patrons operate equipment and investigate issues, but we will not digitize materials for patrons.
- Users can only digitize the media that they own or create, for example home movies and old photographs. Copyrighted content, such as motion pictures, may not be scanned.
- Users must provide a storage device to take their digitized media home. The Henderson County Public Library does not provide USB drives or SD cards for patrons to use, and media cannot be retained on the Preservation Station computers.
- Use of Preservation Station is subject to the Library’s Internet Computer Network Policy, Library Behavior Policy, Preservation Station User Agreement, and any other applicable Library policies and procedures.
Funding to establish Preservation Station was graciously provided by the Friends of the Henderson County Public Library and anonymous donors.
