Henderson County, Kentucky USGenWeb Census Project

In December 1778, through the influence of Colonel Richard Henderson and Nathaniel Hart, the Virginia House of Delegates granted to the Richard Henderson (Transylvania) Company, 200,000 acres of land in Kentucky situated between the Ohio and Green Rivers. In 1783, the North Carolina legislature granted the same to the company. The result being that Henderson County was formed out of part Christian County and was organized on June 4, 1799.

The Genealogy Collection has developed over time to become one of the largest collections of family history information in the Midwest. The collection includes more than 40,000 print items (family histories, indexes to records, how-to-books, cemetery transcriptions, family history magazines, and more), as well as military pension information. The

In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea, originated by Jeff Murphy, was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. This pilot project became known as KYGenWeb.

The Kentucky Room has been indexing obituaries in the Owensboro newspapers since 1977. The online database has been live since 2006. It is updated almost daily by Kentucky Room staff. All items indicating a death in Western Kentucky or Southern Indiana are added. Individuals who died in other locations are included if it is stated that they were former residents or if they had relatives in the area.
