The Kentucky Genealogical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run by Kentucky family researchers since 1973. As part of our mission, we seek ways to connect and educate our members about Kentucky and it’s rich past.

Our members have a common interest in learning more about their Kentucky ancestors, studying Kentucky family history, and sharing knowledge with other family historians.

With over 1,500 worldwide members, we offer many opportunities to connect with researchers who have a genealogical interest in Kentucky.

NGS - National Genealogy Society

NGS is more than a century old! The National Genealogical Society was organized in Washington, DC, in 1903. NGS has a long history of leading the way in genealogy and produced some remarkable achievements. It was the first national genealogical organization. The society published the first national genealogical journal (NGSQ) and co-created the Board for Certification (BCG) . Twelve of the original BCG board members were current or former NGS officers or NGSQ contributors.

Owensboro Area Obituary Index

The Kentucky Room has been indexing obituaries in the Owensboro newspapers since 1977. The online database has been live since 2006. It is updated almost daily by Kentucky Room staff. All items indicating a death in Western Kentucky or Southern Indiana are added. Individuals who died in other locations are included if it is stated that they were former residents or if they had relatives in the area.

In 1814 Posey County was named for Indiana Territorial Governor Thomas Posey. The county seat of Posey is Mt. Vernon, the largest town with a population of 7478 (2000 census). Posey County is largely a farming county but has an industrial past and large industry today located mainly in the area near the Ohio River.
